9 ft. Optical Patch Cable Length for Pioneer DVD?

When I finally got my new DSP-A1, the first think I wanted to do was connect the digital audio from the DVD. I read through both the amp and DVD player manuals. I came across something very interesting and quite puzzling in the Pioneer manual. The Pioneer manual recommends a 9-foot optical cable! NINE FEET! Geeze, I can only find 1-meter patches.

Now, I have an undergraduate EE degree and thing I can explain why. However, I would love any opinions you may have.
