From the description at the links in the messages below, the Sony seems to be not as flexible as the Marantz MKII in that the user cannot label the softkeys. If I want to control some feature Sony hasn't thought of I have to remember what key I programmed it on. Also has anyone used the Sony to control the URC 3000 IR to X10 controller? The Marantz can sort-of do it.

: I bought the Sony about six months ago. I found it through a relentless search for something that make my system operable by my wife. The AV2000 fits my needs almostly perfectly.

: Almost: The remote has a combination of hard and soft keys - brilliant! The softkeys are a "subset" of the hard keys. And only a subset of the softkeys are usable under any given hard key. An example: press the "amp" hard key. The softkey area now has labels for amp-based functions like component input select. I would prefer to be able to use any/all labels not just Sony's choice.

: Perfect: The combination of hard and soft keys makes this a real easy "convenient" remote to use. It will not replace every component remote for all functions. Rather, it replaces all other remotes for normal operation; I still use the amp remote for surround sound balancing as an example.

: My system: Yamaha DSP-A1 amp, matching tuner, Panasonic S-VHS VCR, Sony 8-mm VCR, Pioneer DV500 DVD, Toshiba 50-inch rear projection TV.

: My two biggest problems: The Yamaha amp uses unique codes for power on and power off. The Sony doesn't handle this well from what I can tell. The TV does not map the video inputs to channels so its difficult to select a component and the appropriate video input automatically

: I found the Marantz remote capable of replacing all remotes (generally) but to big for a hand held, to heavy and not intuitative enough for my family.
