Digital interconnect: will this do ok?

Well you could do but just any old piece of coax may not be the right sort of coax for digital. The bandwidth of CATV coax may not be wide enough for digital audio and the composition of the cable may not be ideal.

Generally a reasonable quality shielded 75ohm composite video cable (eg from Rat Shack) should be OK.
