Harman Kardon AVR10 TROUBLE

Hey, just today, I bought an AVR10 real cheap from a store which was going out of business...
Well, now that i get the thing home, I'm having problems..
All I want the reciever for, is for regular 2-speaker stereo, to use with my computer.
When I connect the speakers to the Front Speaker inputs tho, the sound is almost inaudible, until i crank the vol, and it's still extremely quiet. All I have connected is my computer (also tried using a portable cd player with same results). Also, if i use headphones, it's the same thing.
Although...if i plug a speaker into the surround outputs (Center or Rear), and go into surround mode, it works. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I tried playing with the Tape Mon button with no luck. Also, i have no remote for this, and I suspect there should have been one. Is there a button i need to use on the remote?
