Digital & Coax outputs on CD Player

I have a Marantz 67SE CD Player. Can someone tell me why I have Optical and Coax connectors on this unit. I thought they were only for DVD and laserdisks ? My receiver only has one digital input connector so should I reserve this for when I buy a DVD player and use the analogue connection for my CD player ?
(I am a beginner and need help)
