Check out the reviews of Mondo Design HT furniture on Home theatre portion of this site... I opted for a 5 shelf unit after goin through the same thing you're going through: Thousands spent on fancy high-tech audio components, speakers, heck, even some of the cables are expensive! And then I started looking at furniture thinking, I could get by with something inexpensive: Boy was I wrong, not only does "inexpensive" furniture look bad, but as you hinted in your post, the build quality and materials are sub-standard. The only way to go is to get "real" furniture; the kind that may cost a bundle, but if it's good quality and designed with versatility in mind, can far outlast the components we're all so tempted to replace every so often...hope this helps clear things up for you, it sounds like you were already leaning (wisely) away from cheap stuff...
