Dennis

: Is this Marantz controller really versatile?

Yes

:I don't know much about these all in one commander thingies (still have 6 remotes laying around driving me nuts) I'm definitely interested in getting one if it can accomodate all of my current system components:
: Mitsu 36" TV (forgot model, it has 2 tuner PIP, 2 S-video inps. which set it apart from the other Mitsu 36")
: JVC 9500U SVHS deck
: Pioneer CLD-604 LD player (also used as CD player occasionally)
: Sony STR-DA50ES receiver
: Panasonic A110 DVD player
: Sony Hi-8 recording deck (forgot model#, from last year though)

No problem - it has enough memory for all these commands.

: Can this do startup macro sequences for starting all the necessary equipment and playing a DVD movie or LD, for example?

Yes

See my review of the RC2000 mark II on the main SMR site.
