Newbie and Confused Posted by Jeff V [IP: 152.163.205.54] on December 29, 1998 at 20:17:07: In Reply to: Newbie and Confused posted by Nigel Pond [SysOp] on December 29, 1998 at 09:37:55 : : Just got an HK AVR-75 for $599.00 at Netmarket.com. Great site and good experience so far. Getting to the point, there are 'way' many connections on this thing. I don't understand what should be connected to what!. : Generally all your "source" equipment should be connected to the receiver and then the video output from the receiver to the TV, with the audio being provided by the speakers attached to your receiver's speaker outputs. : :I've got a Panasonic TV with two inputs (one with SVideo) and something labeled; 'TO AUDIO AMP'. I have also got the Panasonic A110 DVD player. : With a source that provides an s-video output you will get a much better picture using the s-video output, so connect the s-video output of the DVD player to one of the s-video inputs of the receiver - if you do not have one labelled DVD just use VCR or AUX. If your receiver has a digital audio input as well connect the DVD's digital audio output to it with a 75ohm cable (a reasonable quality video cable like one from Radio Shack should work just fine). : Then make an s-video connection between TV and receiver. : :I have an old Canton three-piece satellite system ( a woofer with two satellites attached). They cost about $750 10 years ago and still sound pretty decent. : Connect these to the main Left and Right speaker ouputs of the receiver. : : I would suggest that you start saving for some and for a center channel speaker too!! You may even have to get new main L+R's if you cannot find a center to sonically match your Cantons : :What's the deal with SVideo on the receiver? Why would I want to connect SVideo to the receiver? Confused by the connections....Please help. : Better video quality with s-video sources, see above. : If you tell us what other gear you want to connect up to the receiver, we'll try to help. Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention that I have Cambridge SW Center Stage. If I understand correctly there is no need (or desire) to connect anything directly to the TV. Is this right? Just connect everything to the receiver and make one connection to the TV with an S-Video cable. On to the next mystery. When I am listening to CD or radio, the only thing that sounds good is Stereo. Shouldn't I be able to listen to Stereo music with the center channel? The only time the center channel even plays is when I switch to DPL. The sound is terrible. No bass, No loudeness, No power. It and the fronts are both set to Large. Anyone lend a hand?
