EQ for HT??

I have read (somewhere in this forum, I think) that an equalizer should not be used in an HT system. Why??? If there is a problem with the DPL circuits operating up-stream of the tape loop, could I place an EQ between my VCR and the receiver?? I find that for a lot of tapes, some type of equalization (usually to decrease the very top-end hiss, and to boost the very low-end bass)is necessary. Thanks for any help / comments.
