Hugues,

: How can I tell my Harmon Kardon is close or is on distortion? The volume level goes from -58dB to +15dB. It flashes at +15dB, but what does it mean exactly? Is 0dB close to distortion?

First of all we need to clarify the volume scale. The H/K assumes that you'll calibrate to Dolby and THX reference level - in other words, using the internally generated calibration noise and setting all channels to 75dB. Once you've done this, 00dB indicates reference level. The -dB figures are decibels below reference and the +dB figures decibels above reference level. Believe me, if you've calibrated correctly getting above reference level will prove tricky, it's very loud.

Your ears are the best guide to distortion. Listen carefully, especially for high frequency crackling and sounds of the woofer physically hitting its stops. If you can't hear anything like that then you're pretty safe.

Stuart.
