: Frank,

: : I have been reading a lot lately of Sony's and Philip's new Super Audio CD format called DSD (Direct Stream Digital) Will this format require a special decoder connected to our current audio system to obtain the 5.1 channel signal or will the decoding be built-in to the super-audio cd player?

: Good questions…

: The Sony/Philips system will be called SACD and will use the DSD syntax. This system will compete directly with the DVD-Forum approved format, namely MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing) which is licensed by Dolby Labs. The two, just like Dolby Digital and DTS will be incompatible.

: You will of course need additional decoding for each, but players with internal decoding will surface, just as some current DVD-Video players have fully blown Dolby Digital decoders. Discs will also provide a level of backward compatibility with DVD-Video and CD-DA depending on the software company involved.

: Stuart.

Thats all we need is another format.
Sheesh :) you think one standard can be made but no :P heh
