I find that keeping basic cable ($10.50 for me, which includes 30 channels) is pretty economic, even if there are duplications, beyond getting network TV. I have set up an amplified cable network in which each coax output in my home receives (depending on the channel selected), what's on cable, what's selected on the satellite receiver, or what's playing on my DVD. This mitigates the need to get extra DSS receivers and does not cost that much (we mounted the whole thing on a piece of plywood in the cellar).

My point is, cable is as cable does. It depends on what you are trying to get out of it. The movies on satellite are great, and you can screen out the bad channels.

Total cost: $30 for DirecTV, $10.50 for cable, $30 more for full USSB -- that's about $70/month. On my old cable system, I paid a little less for cable+HBO+Showtime ($60), but with satellite you get 7 HBO channels, plus 3 showtime channels, plus music channels, plus more PPV options plus several other movie channels. Overall, it's a better deal, but you can spend a bundle.
