: If it has inputs and outputs, then you connect it to the front left and right channels (A) and then connect your front left and right speakers to the appropriate outputs on the subwoofer. This is a passive sub.

Not necessarily passive - active subs (ones with amps built-in) can have speaker level and line level connections.

: If it has an RCA connection (or two) then you connect line level input to the sub. With one connection you probably want to use a "sub out" connection that should be clearly labeled on the receiver if it exists. With two connections I think you can use either the subout, as above, or you can hook in the same full range signal that you are connecting to the receiver. You may be able to do this by running it through a tape loop using the tape monitor feature of the receiver. (Or maybe not)

I think he said it does not have a line-level sub output. In that case if they use the R+L line-outs they could use Y-cables to feed main speaker amps and sub (assuming they are using outboard amps.)

To keep it simple use speaker level connections between L+R main outputs and sub and connect L+R speakers to the appropriate outputs on the sub. That way the sub's crossover will send the correct fequency stuff to the correct speakers.
