Yet another Optical/Coaxial question... Posted by Stephen [IP: 164.68.153.124] on January 29, 1999 at 12:00:46: In Reply to: Yet another Optical/Coaxial question... posted by Dennis Pagoulatos on January 28, 1999 at 16:25:57: Let's first clear things up by saying there is little to no NOTICABLE difference between optical and coaxial cables for a home theater like yours -- if you had, say, a McIntosh theater, it may be prudent to buy a $500 cable. However, considering you have a Sony receiver (ES series, perhaps), it should not be that big of a concern for you. Like I said, you'll have a hard time getting HONEST opinions from people arguing the sound quality with optical (Toslink, I assume) cable is bad. I imagine the people from which you got that information are not too knowledgeable in this subject, but if they are, I apologize for making such an accusation. Toslink, while not the greatest grade of optical cable, will do just fine for a mediocre home theater setup. Remember -- digital IS digital, so whatever cable you use, you'll still get pretty decent sound!! The optical cables are, however, sensitive to bends, so you should be sure to make a clear, uninterrupted path for the optical cable. I don't think getting a coaxial digital cable is very necessary for you, but you can try it if you want -- but you'll find that (let me reiterate once more) there is no real difference. Just a sidenote: high-quality VIDEO cable will also work as a "coaxial digital" cable. Hope it helps. E-mail me with any comments and/or questions.
