Okay, first of all, the receiver I'm using is the Sony ES50, the speakers I am driving with it are Polk RT1000 fronts, CS350 center, and LS/FX surrounds, along with a Velodyne HGS-10 sub, the DVD player is a Panasonic A110 and the LD player is the Pioneer 604, so yes, it is a very mediocre setup, but here's where I think you're presuming a little too much:

There IS a noticable difference in the sound between a $150 coax. digital interconnect (1 meter), and a $30 Monster toslink cable (1 meter), even on my decidedly not high end setup...

I personally noticed a difference using the DVD players optical out, and then the coax. out. The "quality" of the sound was about the same in general, but I found the toslink to have a certain "brightness" that wasn't there with the coax. I don't know which signal is more true to the original, I just know that after some very careful, controlled listening (and I ran the toslink in a straight line, which is not typical, but I did it anyway to yield the best possible signal) I determined that the coax. sounds a tiny bit less harsh...of course the difference is admittedly so slight that it's not even noticable most of the time, but I was concerned nonetheless how much a difference a higher quality cable would make.

Thanks for the comments though. I do wish I had a Mcintosh theater setup, but it would be wasted in my small apartment :)
