Cables What kind?

I am a novice at electronics but i am learning. My question is does it make a difference what cables i use when connecting my system. I have an hk avr85 and infinity overature3 speakers. also a sony cd player that should be upgraded. What cables should i use to connect my cd player, right now they are just cheap rca plugs. What speaker cable should I use? Do all these pricey cable really make a difference? Thank you
