Ken,

While the Olympus and Sony digital cameras are nice to have, you can alway start out with a lesser unit and trade-up in time. People are always upgrading their digital cameras as the mega-pixel models are becoming more affordable, you might find a good deal on a used or new/discontinued 640x480 to get you going. For most use that is enough resolution. I believe you can get started with a resonable unit either used or refurbished stock for around $200. Be sure to buy one with a LCD viewfinder - many lower cost models are optical and that is not what you want.
