Ground loop hum
Posted by mikem on September 26, 1998 at 21:03:51:
I had my stereo setup running off of one 14ga 15amp circut. I decided to add a dedicated AC 20amp 12ga wire circut for my amps. When I did this I now get a hum from my speakers. When I plug everything into the old circut the hum disappears. So I know its being caused by the new ground. Any tips for correcting this? I put a cheater plug on the new circut bypassing the ground and all is fine. I would like to fix this the correct way. My next step is to go into the breaker panel and wire the grounds and neutral wires together. They are currently on common blocks. Do you think this would help? I appear to have a mis-match of resistance which is causing the hum. Another thought is to run the ground wire from the new socket to the old one, thus passing the ground back to the old circut from the new one. This would keep a common ground and maybe kill the hum? Any adive or comments?
