Don't plan on a big discount for either brand. You won't find many dealers carrying these brands that blow out prices. Most of them are high end shops with large overhead costs. In return, you can listen in person before you buy and usually get them to set it up with your equipment or even loan you one with a guaranteed form of payment to hold.

This whole mail order idea bothers me a great deal. Personally, I would never mail order a piece of equipment like this. If I take up a dealer's time listening to the equipment, I feel he is entitled to make the profit. If everyone bought mail order, these shops would die out and the majority of the high end would go with them. Where would you go to listen to them before buying?

Most high end manufacturers plow a much higher percentage of profit back into R&D than the biggies do. They also do not and don't want to produce in mass quantities. This is how they keep quality high. I know that Theta is currently QA'ing 100% on the new Casanova. That gives them about 20 units a day at best. Do the math. That's about 4000 pieces a year if demand stays high. For a piece that complex having that small a distribution, they need to make more than a few bucks a unit to stay in business. The biggies probably put out 4000 a week!

Lexicon is somewhat in the same boat although they have their effect and sound reinforcement lines to help with the bottom line.

I'll get off my soap box now.
