Other than to take the pursit approach, why would you do this? If you are in fact wanting to eliminate additional processing, the purchase of a "cheap' DD receiver is certainly NOT the way to go. This will involve another layer of D/A and A/D processing on most receivers which defeats your purpose as I understand it.

The only ways I can think of to accomplish this is to either:

A. Have an amplifier with variable input level control. This assumes you can control channel balance from the player. This is probably the best way to accomplish what you want to do. Not many amps have variable input levels though.

B. Have an amplifier with 5 individual output level controls.

C. Purchase some high quality analog volume attenuators. Some audiophiles use this method to eliminate the preamp from the loop and just vary the input signal. Keep in mind that these are generally not cheap ($100 or more per stereo control) and will require double the amount of interconnects.

Also keep in mind that B and C will probably mean individual adjustment and balance every time volume is changed and will almost certainly not be handled via a remote. Also, if you go with C and use stereo units, you will be controlling Front L&R together, Rear L&R together, and center separately. None of these are particularly user friendly solutions.
