Need receiver recommendations Posted by Alan Maier[SysOp] on September 27, 1998 at 09:18:17: In Reply to: Need receiver recommendations posted by craig woodman on September 26, 1998 at 21:00:48: Craig, I believe you can get by with a modest amount of power and focus on quality in your receiver selection. Today there are few audio-only receivers on the market, however what is left is either respectable or so cheaply built that it's obvious. Yamaha has a audio-only line, as does Denon. You might look into entry level separates based around a tuner/preamp and power amp. At the entry point look at the offerings from Adcom, Rotel, AudioSource (etc). Also consider used - you can find trade-in entry-level separates quite often as the owner has traded up to a high level power amp or moved into a preamp and tuner - or switched to surround sound. If you stick with separates you need not worry about current. If in doubt about current, take a look at the continuous power rating into a 4 ohm load - not peak but continuous. Most modern day mass market receivers don't list this as they have very poor current capability. Happy shopping, Alan : I need to replace my reciever and would like advice in evaluating wattage, amps, etc. Background: I have two old JBL LS-6 floorstanding speakers that have been recently rebuilt. Each has a 12-inch woofer, two 3-inch mid-ranges and a 2-inch tweeter. I have no idea how much power I need to drive them well (I haven't had a good receiver in years). My listening area is 14x15 but one end is open to a dining room/kitchen. The ceiling is a cathedral ceiling that rises to 18ft. area. : I listen to all types of music--classic rock, blues, country, and classical. Eagles, Emmy lou Harris, Clapton, BBKing, Howling wolf, etc. I like a good defined bass and sweet highs (especially in soft passages--hearing Clapton's fingers gliding over guitar strings makes you feel like your are watching him in person).
