Need receiver recommendations Posted by Alan Maier[SysOp] on September 27, 1998 at 22:21:25: In Reply to: Need receiver recommendations posted by Robert Turnbull on September 27, 1998 at 21:36:50: Craig, Indeed damping factor is the ratio between a 8 ohm test load and the output impedance of the amplifier. Damping factor and low output impedance is desirable to dampen or absorb the back EMF from the bass driver(s), which often translates into better driver control. Current capability is not the same - simply said current capability is the power supply ability to provide current for the output section (transistors) to pass to the load (speakers). A amplifier with ample current capability will be able to provide more wattage into a 4 ohm load than an 8 ohm load (a rule of thumb is at least 40-50% more on a good amp). Many receivers today can not provide enough current to provide more wattage into a 4 ohm load than 8 due to severe cost cutting. Actually most receivers today can not handle a 4 ohm load without damage. So when I recommend an amplifier with good current capability, I am really going for an indication of what cost cutting may (or hopefully not) has been done on the unit in question. Best regards, Alan
