: I am a novice at electronics but i am learning. My question is does it make a difference what cables i use when connecting my system. I have an hk avr85 and infinity overature3 speakers. also a sony cd player that should be upgraded. What cables should i use to connect my cd player, right now they are just cheap rca plugs. What speaker cable should I use? Do all these pricey cable really make a difference? Thank you

I've had no problems in the past on using gold connections between my CD player and reciever. I also use regular RCA connectors for my tapes which don't really put out the best signal anyways. The biggest difference that you are going to notice, both in your pocket book and for listening pleasure is in the speaker cable. The basic rule is that the bigger the cable is from your reciever to your speaker, the easier it is for the reciever to push the signal to the speaker (just like a pump pumping water to a hose) which will allow the reciever to run cooler. Not only that, but the base response from your speakers should also be noticeable and clearer. I've found that using Monster Cables to any Woofer or Subwoofer is probably the best thing I could have done for my system, and then running 10 guage for my other speakers works well.
