WHy is 40% of DVD screen black??

Yes, that was the question. It was in reference to the display method known as "Letterboxing" on DVDs.

In a nutshell: to maintain the original theatrical presentation of movies on standard TV screens, it's required to vertically "shrink" the picture so the full horizontal presentation can be displayed. This results in "black bars" appearing above AND below the picture. Depending on the horizontal to vertical aspect ratio of the movie frame, these "black bars" can occupy as much as 40 (FORTY) percent of the total screen area.
