Wire me up Scotty Posted by Ken Simmons [IP: 208.8.212.248] on February 07, 1999 at 21:18:36 In Reply to: Wire me up Scotty posted by Jimmy C on February 07, 1999 at 16:46:44: : 1. What guage wire for surrounds (30 ft. reach) and a 140 watt/channel output. For these questions, I'd recommend NOTHING SMALLER than #18, though #16 should be quite adequate. : 3. What makes good speaker cable (I see 16 guage priced form $ .40/ft to 1.50 Plus)? I personally use "whatever I have on-hand" OR I get "basic" speaker wire at Radio Shack. If that "scares you", go for MONSTER BRAND wire - it's very good and relatively inexpensive (not to be confused with "cheap"). :) : 4. Can regular (fairly good) speaker wire with plastic around it go into the wall or is something else required? You need wire that's specifically "designed" to go in walls. Parts Express (www.partsexpress.com) and MCM Electronics (www.mcmelectronics.com) both sell jacketed wire for in-wall use. Again, make sure it's NO SMALLER than #18, though I guess I'd recommend #16 to #12, depending on budget and "taste". : 5. Can wire for all speakers go in the wall together or will some kind of interference be generated? Yes, all the speaker wires can be "bundled" together. : 6. Had planned to use bananna clips but looking at high end store saw some kind of connectors with a single pin thingy (technical term) at about a 30 deg angle. Is this a spade connector? Is it better? For the "best" in connection, STAY AWAY from banana plugs and opt for crimp-on SPADE LUGS. hope this helps? :) Ken
