: I have an Onkyo 919 receiver and am looking to add Onkyo's ED-301 Dolby Digital processor.

:Would anyone have an opinion as to whether a plain old DB-25 printer cable would do the trick [for hooking up the receiver to the decoder]?

In answer to my own question, after being assured by sales personnel at two high-end audio shops, by Onkyo's own corporate support service, and by several people on Usenet that the serial cable would not work, I borrowed one (a DB25 male to DB25 female) and tried it anyway.

Guess what? It worked perfectly! I can't hear any crosstalk on the test tone, but I will need to do further real-world testing before I can recommend this very inexpensive alternative to a US$95 cable.
