Popping sounds from amp ... help!

Posted by L [IP: 198.108.160.127] on February 11, 1999 at 03:46:06
Using Mozilla/4.5 [en] (Win95; I):

I've had my Technics SU-G95 (stereo:135Wx2, DPL:70Wx3+35Wx2) amp for a little over four years when I started getting popping sounds in DPL mode every time I turn the volume knob (even with no input from any source). The popping sounds coincide with every volume change in decibel, eg. if I turn the volume up or down by five decibels, I will hear five 'clean' pops of equal volume.

Also, when amplifying any signal (without turning the volume knob), popping sounds will still be heard, albeit they will not sound 'clean' or uniform, but more 'scratchy'.

Shortly after, the stereo mode was affected too. I've checked all the speakers and connections and they are just fine. I'm not sure if it's even worth repairing since it's a cheap amp. The service centre told me it would cost $40 just for inspection, although it would be deducted from the final bill if I chose to have it repaired.

I'm leaning towards the Yamaha RX-v995 for my new amp/receiver. I don't really want to discard the old amp yet, since
I've learnt that it could be used for DD-EX.

My dad has had a quadrophonic Technics receiver for over twenty years and it has never needed a single repair. Isn't
quality a priority with Technics anymore?

Has anybody encountered a similar problem with his/her amp? If so, what was the problem, or how much was the cost of repair, if the amp was even repaired at all? Help, anybody?

ps. I've posted a similar message on Forum 4, but have had a limited response.
