SDDS is (I think) a 7.1 discrete channel system while Dolby Digital(AC-3) is 5.1. I am not sure whether the extra 2 channels are front effect channels or side channels. Plain Dolby Surround Sound is older technology that lack stereo separation in the rear channels and none of the channels are truely discrete. SDDS and Dolby Digital are far ahead of the "old" Dolby Surround Sound, but I dont' know that I could tell the difference between AC-3 and SDDS(I have never done a direct comparison). SDDS is not implemented into the home theater market, only in theaters.
As far as THX, it is not a competing sound format. It is more of a certification/calibration process. THX works in conjunction with AC-3, SDDS, ect. to ensure a quality reproduction of what the producers intended the movie to look and sound like. THX certified theaters or products have been tested by THX to meet or exceed certain standards. There are many products available that far surpass the minimum requirements of THX, but just did not bother to spend the $$ to submit their product to THX for certification. I hope this helps a little. CJ
