Sound insulation Posted by Ken Simmons [IP: 208.8.211.173] on February 13, 1999 at 17:41:05 In Reply to: Sound insulation posted by Scott A. Avery on February 13, 1999 at 13:19:37: : Do you really want to absorb the reflections in a "stereo" room? Well, you want to MINIMIZE reflections, echoes, and similar "sound bouncing" rather than "totally eliminate" them. After all, you don't want a listening room with the characteristics of a Professional Skating Rink, Basketball Auditorium, or similar "echo chamber", right? ;) Therefore, it's advised to have some "sound absorbent" materials in your room. "Overstuffed" chairs/sofas, carpeting, and draperies are excellent "echo dampers" and, for most situations, are more than adequate. :) : Am I just too low class an audiophile because I listen to music mixed this way? Not at all! Heck, I myself am considered "low class" by many because I have RADIO SHACK sound equipment. After all, what's important is YOUR MUSICAL ENJOYMENT, not "impressing" local audio "snobs". ;) : What are some options for sopund absorbing material where curtains won't fit the bill? (SAF exists even for single people) Boy, that's a toughie! have you considered applying a "stucco-like" finish to the "offending" wall surfaces? I'm sure that could help. If the wall is large enough, you could try putting a "comfy" chair/sofa or even some hanging plants. The idea is something to "cause interference" with the sound before it reaches the wall. This looks like a job for the AUDIOE GURUS!! Perfessers Maier, Robinson and Potis - Please "step up to the box". :) Ken
