Ground loop hum Posted by wt kwong on October 02, 1998 at 23:30:58: In Reply to: Ground loop hum posted by Alan Maier[SysOp] on September 27, 1998 at 08:52:34: : Mike, : The problem in your setup is that the two circuits have a problem with ground potential. Most likely the existing circuit had a faulty ground due to a weak point in the chain of outlets - you might want to address this for piece of mind as it indicates a possible house wiring problem, in particular you most likely have a bad ground connection at an outlet between your system and the service panel. In the meantime you need to connect your entire system to the dedicated line. : Alan : : I had my stereo setup running off of one 14ga 15amp circut. I decided to add a dedicated AC 20amp 12ga wire circut for my amps. When I did this I now get a hum from my speakers. When I plug everything into the old circut the hum disappears. Mike If you're serious about your AC and if you have a backyard you can try to create the perfect ground by using a copper rod (longer is better, but 6' is probably minimum). Dig a hole 2' deep. mine the rod, and connect your dedicated ground to the rod.
