ordering mail order Posted by Nigel on October 21, 1998 at 08:41:34: In Reply to: ordering mail order posted by Greg Meyer on October 20, 1998 at 11:47:12: First of all, buying anythng mail order can be more risky and more hassle than buying from a good local dealer, even though prices may be cheaper by mail. Think about things like advice on set up, resolving problems etc - it's always easier with a local dealer - and by local dealer I do not mean Circuit City, Good Guys, Best Buy etc. Generally the "help" in those stores at worst is non-existent, at best is basic. A good independent dealer in my view, especially for a newcomer to this is essential - they can discuss with you things like the sort of room you will be using, source material that you watch (DVD, LD, VHS etc) and budget and help you design a system to meet your needs and your budget. Even the best mail order stores cannot do that properly. Next, a local dealer will usually let you listen to various combinations of stuff in the store and maybe even audition it at home in your room with your source material - again an impossibility by mail. I guess the bottom line is if price is your only driver then you will probably get your needs met by mail order, though once you build a relationship with a dealer they can be flexible on price, if you have the guts to ask. If it is system design, set up and quality after-sales service you want then a local guy is the best best. In any event I have not heard good things about Uncle's Stereo. Check out Bill Nau's mail order help list for details of other mail order outlets and make sure that they are factory authorised dealers so you can get manufacturer warranties honoured if necessary.
