There is certainly a big difference between the crappy stuff that comes in the box with your gear and properly shielded cables using quality connectors. Once you get into the esoteric realms of cables costing, say, more than $75 per meter, I would venture to suggest that the incremental benefit rapidly diminishes with increasing of the cable.

I use a mixture of SMR, Monster, Wireworld, Radio Shack gold and home made cables. I would disagree that Monster are considered low end - some of their interconnects (the M1500i for example) are extraordinarliy expensive, and their top of the line speaker cable recently won an award from the AAHPAV - definitely not a low end institution!!
