dolby surround upgrade

I have a CARVER CT17 dolby surround processor/preamp-tuner,which does not have 5.1 inputs. The system is powered by three discreet power amps.
A DVD player with or without AC3 decoder built in is an option.

What is the easiest way to upgrade to dolby digital without "throwing away" the CARVER CT 17?
