The analog sound level meter offered at Radio Shack is just fine for balancing the speaker level in a surround sound system. It is easy to use, and comes with a response graph to indicate it's shortcomings (it is not up to the requirements of testing frequency response). I have owned a older version of that meter for over 20 years and it still works as good as new.
