Ac3 vs whatever else!!!

I am thinking about upgrading my system. I was recently given a demonstration on a Yamaha (I believe its a 3090 their AC-3 system) At the present, I have a Yamaha DSP-A970. Its is powering a set of Bose AM-7's in the the front, AM-5's in the rear, Cerwin-Vega VS-12 (mains), and a big Klipsh subwoofer. What is the difference between an AC-3 system and the Yamaha DSP-A2090 (or whatever they are calling their flagship home theater system.) Is AC-3 better? Would I see a significant improvment with an AC-3 system?
