I have actually had success using masking or scotch tape. I place this in areas where the cat can reach, also on top of things like turntables and speaker cabinets. You roll the tape into a loop and stick it to whatever surface you are trying to protect. It will totally freak the cat out when it sticks to him. He will quit trying soon after and you should be able to remove the unsitely tape.
