: Howdy Folks,

: I have a great question for the home theater crowd. Which should I have in the living room, Hardwoods or Carpet?

LOL. Now, THIS discussion sounds familiar, as I had it with my wife last year during our remodel. Our family room opens partway into the kitchen, and has a beamed and vaulted wood ceiling. To make matters worse, the back wall is a series of French doors, with lath and plaster walls, cherry cabinets. The flooring? My wife won that one, as usual -- hardwood.

Okay, so the room is so live it should be nicknamed Frankenstein. What do you do? I've got soft leather furniture, and a large oriental rug. The vaulted ceiling actually helps, as does the opening to the kitchen, to reduce standing waves and resonance from a rectangular room. I've got a few things on the walls, and the French doors have blackout shades that absorb reflections when down (i.e., when watching a movie). I also use electrostatic speakers out a bit into the room, which tames some things too, and for once, having a tight sweet spot is an advantage. I'm working on a little bass boom in the stairwell at one corner, but you can't hear it elsewhere in the room.

In short, you (1) first save the marriage, then (2) do the best you can with what you've got, and (3)
recognize that you can only do so much no matter what room decorating choices you've made.

Have fun. It'll work out fine.
