dolby surround upgrade

: Buy any Dolby Digital decoder that has a 6 channel bypass. The new Technics SH 500 with Dolby Dig and DTS ought to work well. Connect the L/R/C/LR/RR and sub pre out of CT17 to the 6 ch bypass inputs of decoder. Connect 6 ch out of decoder to your PA and powered sub(If you have one) .Now the decoder would be your preamp for your DVD player, Hit bypass and your CT17 would be your preamp for all other sources.

Would this work almost as well if you didn't have sub pre out? I have an old (91?)Pioneer 9700S receiver that has L/R/C/LR/RR pre-outs and am hoping to buy something like the SH-AC500D.
