There are many speaker mounting products on the market today. For larger bookshelf speakers I recommend setting the speakers on brackets or a sturdy bookshelf shelf instead of using a simple mounting system. If the speakers are smallish bookshelf models then a quality hanger mount designed for speakers will be fine. A tip on installation of the hardware... the rear of the cabinet will be stronger near an edge as opposed to the middle. Self tapping pan head philips sheet metal or woodworking screws will do nicely and you can go into the cabinet farther than the thickness of the rear (which I would hope is thicker than 3/8"!). After you drill a pilot hole for the screw, place a small drop of white glue into the hole before attaching hardware - this will lessen the chance of the particle-board flaking apart. There is no reason to use any other type of fastener than the philips head sheet metal or woodworking screws. If in doubt - mount them on a shelf.

: I have a Cerwin Vega HT speaker configuration. The front and rear speakers are bookshelf sized, but have no provision for a speaker mount. Can I just screw something onto the back of the speaker cabinet, or will that affect its sound? I think that they're made of 3/8" particle board, so I know that I should use short screws. I heard of these metal cylinders that allow you to drill a hole in wood, then sgugly fit these cylinders into the hole, the cylinders have a threaded hole in them and come with matcjing screws. Would this be better or worse that simply tapping screws into the wood? Are there other ways to mount small speakers without drilling into them? Thanks for any help!
