Sony S-Link questions

Can anyone tell me if the Sony S-Link cable is just a regular stereo (or mono) miniplug cable, or is it a special cable that I need to get from Sony?

Also, I am trying to connect my XBR2 TV to my 50ES receiver, in hopes that the TV's infrared sensor will pass the commands on to the receiver rather than having to always try to point at the receiver (which is at a tough angle from the best viewing position). Is this what the S-link will do for me? If not, what WILL it do (its not very well documented in either of mu user manuals)?
