Sony S-Link questions

As far as I know it is a regular mono miniplug, not stereo. I cannot help because I am having problems with my S-link.
I have the 50ES receiver and an 88ES changer along with a Sony VCR and cannot get the S-link to work for any component.
Not only does it not work, but the remote on the 50ES will no longer communicate with the receiver if anything is plugged into the S-link.

Looking for help myself
