I have one of the Clark models installed in my couch and I do not think it is at all a gimmick. No doubt the purists would say different, but for me it enhances the expereince. Now, as with most things, it is best used in moderation, ie without having the power to it cranked up too high, and despite what Clark say in their blurb about being able to use them full range, mine works as an extension of my sub, being fed by a y-connector from the sub out of my processor, and so is crossed over at the same frequency. I did try for a while to run it at full range and quickly changed back.
