I contacted sony, using a phone number posted in Forum 6 (1-800-222-7669, then 5,2,4,3 for options). They told me that there is a fix (a part, meaning a trip to the service center). Please see my post in Forum 6, under "Sony DVP-S530D and specifics" for details.
