: The follow up posted by Randy explains that if IR is too strong, then I stand to blow the electronic circuits on my devices.

Randy is full of Barbra Streisand (aka: BS)!

The only problenm IR receivers have with sunlight is the same humans have: it's just TOO BRIGHT to work right. Yes, it's wise to keep your IR-controlled stuff out of DIRECT sunlight (i.e. in a cabinet). However, if the conditions are right, even an IR device can be "blinded" even if there isn't any sunshine - all it takes is a really bright "IR source" facing the receiver.

In these cases, a really "powerful" remote can usually overcome temporary "blindness". There is NO WAY IN THIS REALITY ** ANY ** commercial IR remote can "damage" any IR-controlled device.

Therefore, feel free to invest in a "universal" remote. If it happens to have a "cannon-grade" (i.e. "Binford") emitter, then MORE POWER (arr! arr!! ARRR!!!) to you! you'll ensure that your "commands" will reach your devices, NO AMTTER WHERE in the room you are! :)
