Additionally the amount of dB loss is not linear for all frequencies, hence every splice is a source of noise to the signal. Very badly made splices - of which solder is probably one of the worst contributors - can even cause reflections, hence extra information is added to the signal. Having spewed all that, it is likely that in your case - i.e., not high end - the effects will not be audible. Even so, I'd recommend compression butt-splices, and make them heat-shrink them as well. The best kind are hydraulically crimped barrel lugs, but I don't know if you can get those for as small as #16. But first you should mention that ideally you would like the wire replaced. This is probably not practical now, but maybe you can negotiate some other extras in with the contractor.
