A friend of mine tried digital cable from TCI for a few months (here in Pittsburgh), but was disgusted and switched to digital satellite in the end (Dish Network). I don't how much applicable his experience will be to your circumstances, but here was his complaints:

* Only a handful of channels are transmitted digitally with digital cable. The rest were still the same old muddy picture.

* What digital channels there *were* available, were mostly inconsequential. They weren't major channels watched by many. They were mostly useless selections.

* The cost was too high. This made the comparison with digital satellite even more in favor of satellite than it already was with analog cable.

* The picture quality of most digital channels didn't look significantly better than typical cable quality.

* The interface of the digital cable converter box he received was crude and left a lot to be desired.

So, if I were you, I would look seriously into digital satellite as an alternative. He is now a Dish Network subscriber, paying less, getting more, and getting much better quality.
