Pondering Digital Cable

That's not correct. You *do* get DD 5.1 on digital cable (on some PPV movies, anyway) even though it is not real DTV or HDTV. Just like you can get DD 5.1 via digital satellite from DirecTV or Dish Network today, which are not real DTV or HDTV either (just plain old NTSC).

Incidentally, what you said about "digital cable being just digitized NTSC" might be true in a sense you didn't realize: I think I remember hearing that what TCI does with digital cable is digitize the regular cable feed. In other words, it is still subject to the "beginning" quality of the analog cable feed. If digital satellite companies get their feeds from cable networks in their original digital forms instead, then this might be the explanation of why digital cable's digital channels don't look much better than plain old analog cable.
