Any remote experts out there???

Posted by Yohan Pamudji [IP: 198.78.56.55] on September 24, 1999 at 03:14:12
Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 95):

I recently got really interested in the high-end remotes available out there, and something occurred to me that hasn't been addressed in any of the remote reviews I've seen. Maybe somebody here can help me. My question is this: are there any remotes with state-sensing abilities?

Let me explain. This question stemmed from my interest in remote macros. I can imagine a macro that I would name "play DVD", which would turn on the receiver, turn on the DVD player, turn on the TV, set receiver A/V input to DVD player, turn up receiver volume to 1/3 (being conservative here :-)), then finally start playing the DVD. What I mean by "state-sensing" is does the remote know what state the devices it controls are in? Can it know if the receiver, DVD player, or TV are already "on" or not? The problem with the macro that I envisioned is that since there are not separate signals for "on" and "off" for the devices, the remote sends the same signal to the devices to activate and deactivate them. If the remote knows nothing of the devices' current condition, this macro could screw up big time. For instance if the receiver were already on, the macro would turn it off!

Is this a problem with the macro-capable remotes out there? I have no idea, because I haven't tried out any yet. If so, is there a company working on a solution? Thanks beforehand for any feedback to this rather random question of mine.
