What makes a "good" VHS tape

STAY AWAY from "generic store brand" tapes (i.e. K-Mart) since they're usually VERY INFERIOR in their construction, oxide formulation, etc. I remember Consumer Reports did a video tape comparison a few years ago. The "top dogs" were, as I recall, TDK and Maxell; the "bottom feeders" were "bargain-basement" tapes (i.e. "store brand", 3/$1.00 "liquidation shop" specials). In many cases, the "higher grade" tapes are better in terms of A/V quality. However, for GENERAL USE (time-shifting, etc.) the "basic" grade of name brand tapes (i.e. TDK-HS - my personal favorite ;) ) are more than sufficient. Save the "higher" grades (i.e. Maxell "Silver" or "Gold") for your "critical" recording needs (i.e. dubbing Laserdiscs, DVDs, and "bootlegging" commercial videos. ;> ). That's my few bytes. Hope they help... Ken
