This is an interesting question because I just happen to be selling a very expensive crestron color remote that does exactly what you are describing. The way the crestron system works is by connecting all of the components to a splitter via ir sensors. The ir sensors are the sticky wired things that are placed over each components ir "eye". The splitter is hooked up to current sensors that measure how much current each component uses when its in off or standby mode and how much current it uses in "on" mode. When using macros, the systems computer senses the amount of current in the component and "knows" if it's on or off by the current draw. On DVD Play, for example, the remote will continue to power on the dvd player until it goes on, so even if you don't have a direct view of the component, it will continue sending the ON command until that component turns on, and then it will stop sending the command. This stuff is expensive though. You might be better off with a pronto. Good luck
